Climate Ready Communities kicks off with a powerful gathering of community leaders.

21.10.2026

There was a real sense of possibility in the room as community leaders from across Tāmaki Makaurau came together for the first Climate Ready Communities wānanga. The gathering marked the start of a collaborative journey to explore how communities can strengthen their climate readiness while building on the knowledge, relationships and initiatives they already hold.

Hosted by Done, alongside Auckland Council and Beca, the wānanga brought together an incredible mix of community organisations: Long Bay Residents' Association, Kaipātiki Project, Aotearoa Permaculture Workshop, Conservation Volunteers NZ, Tāmaki WRAP and Pacific Vision Aotearoa.

What made the day special was the willingness of everyone to share openly. From stories of community resilience and environmental action already underway, to conversations about the opportunities and challenges a changing climate presents, the room was full of insight, curiosity and a commitment to learning from one another. The purpose of the wānanga was to build relationships, develop a shared understanding of where communities are starting from, and begin shaping what Climate Ready Communities could become together.

Rather than starting with a blank slate, the programme recognises that communities already hold deep knowledge, strong networks and capable leadership. Climate Ready Communities is about nurturing those strengths, creating connections, and supporting locally-led action that reflects the aspirations of each place and community.

We're feeling inspired by the people around the table and excited about what lies ahead. Ngā mihi to everyone who brought their experience, ideas and enthusiasm to this first gathering. Together, we're laying the foundations for more climate-ready communities across Tāmaki Makaurau.
