At Taita Marae in the mighty Dargaville, we collaborated with marae whānau on a significant renovation project with a tight three-day build schedule. During this time, we completed extensive landscaping, including the re-finishing of a large carpark. The wharekai roof was insulated and replaced, and all buildings were re-painted to give the marae a fresh and vibrant look.

In addition to the significant refurbishment of all marae buildings, a core project was to address the overflow from rainwater tanks, which was mixing with wastewater and causing havoc when the overflow had nowhere to go. To solve this issue, the field behind the marae was transformed from farmland back into a wetland. This area was re-shaped and heavily planted with native species, creating a natural and sustainable solution for managing rainwater overflow.

The rainwater overflow was diverted to this newly created wetland area, which now serves as a peaceful place for whānau to rest, reflect, and recharge. This transformation not only addressed the practical issue of water management but also created a serene environment where water, our most precious resource, is the focus. The wetland area has become a sanctuary for both people and wildlife, showcasing the beauty and importance of native plants and sustainable practices.

The project at Taita Marae is a testament to the power of community collaboration and the importance of preserving our natural resources. By working together, we were able to achieve a remarkable transformation in just three days, creating a lasting impact on the marae and its surrounding environment.
