Te Ara Tukutuku.

CLIENT | Auckland Urban Development Office & Toi Waihanga

OUR ROLE | Regenerative Practice Support (Discovery & Concept Design Phases), Mana Whenua Coordination (Developed Design Phase)

Te Ara Tukutuku is a landmark regeneration project located in Wynyard Quarter, Tāmaki Makaurau. This ambitious initiative seeks to transform a former petrochemical tank farm into a vibrant, dynamic public space. Spanning over 10 hectares, the site will evolve into a mixed-use precinct, with five hectares dedicated to one of the most stunning waterfront open spaces in Tāmaki Makaurau.

Mana Whenua have beautifully described the creation process as Tāmata te Mauri, te Tārai, te Pōhutukawa—beginning with healing the mauri of the site from its industrial past, then forming a new naturalised landscape, and cultivating activity that reflects the values and spirit of this place.

The project is a collaborative effort, co-designed by the Auckland Urban Development Office, Mana Whenua Partners and their technical advisors, and the design collective Toi Waihanga.

Done.’s role has evolved alongside the kaupapa and team through different project phases. We have provided regenerative practice support and Mana Whenua coordination services, ensuring the project is grounded in mātauranga Māori and environmental stewardship.

The regeneration of Te Ara Tukutuku is not just about creating a beautiful public space—it is about acknowledging the past, respecting the present, and building a regenerative future. By weaving together mātauranga Māori, innovative design and thoughtful placemaking, the project aspires to set a new standard for urban development in Aotearoa.
